THE 16MM GARRATT OWNERS
& OPERATORS ASSOCIATION

About the 16mmGO&OA The Aim of the 16mm Garratt Owners & Operators Association is to support & encourage the ownership, operation & building of Garratts in 16mm to the foot scale. The 16mmGO&OA was formed in 2002, the idea came about through my love of Beyer–Garratt type locomotives. I was joking with Richard Copperwheat at the time about the crazy idea of forming an association to bring together all those in the world of 16mm modelling who also had a fascination of this type of loco & how we could all meet up once a year to run Garratts with lengthy trains & no shame. With the fear of ridicule, I mentioned this to a few others & it seemed that there were a lot more Garratt lovers out there than I realised! Many were still in the closet, but some were unashamed of their belief in the Garratt locomotive. I produced newsletter No 1, not much in it, but stating the intentions of the 16mmGO&OA thinking it’d just be a ‘flash in the pan’ – one of those spur of the moment things. After a brief advert in the ‘16mm Exchange’ & a few words on the 16mm E-group, nobody was more surprised a year later than me to be dishing out over 180 copies of the free quarterly newsletters worldwide by post & email. The first ‘Garratt Sunday’ was in June 2003 at the South Arbury Railway, Cambridge, England & over 60 people attended. Many Garratts of all types were run, commercially built & home made.
