THE 16MM GARRATT OWNERS
& OPERATORS ASSOCIATION

Newsletter No 2 (November 2002)

Welcome to Newsletter No2 !!

Firstly, i’d like to thank all those people who have written to me, telling me of their Garratt experiences & plans. It seems that many of you have great dreams, i’m sure we all look forward to seeing the results.
The forming of this association has many objectives – to learn more about Garratts in 16mm modelling & in general, to pass on information to others which will assist them in construction or day to day running of their own locomotives, to get together & discuss such matters. We all have one thing in common – our interest in this type of locomotive.
Garratt Sunday
The annual Association Garratt steaming day for 2003 will be on 22nd June & will be held at the South Arbury Railway (Cambridge). It’s hoped to attract many Garratt locomotives & maybe as time progresses it’ll become one of the major events in the 16mm calender… Everyone is welcome (whether you’ll be bringing your loco or not), it’d be great to put some faces to the names of all those of you who’ve joined this association.
The four scale miles of double track main line is now complete at South Arbury & the steaming bays will be completed in time for the end of year steam up on 28th Dec 2002.
Great Reading
I’ve had some enquiries from members asking about books on the subject. Now, this is my personal preference, but one of the most thorough books must be Garratt Locomotives Of The World by A.E.Durrant, published by Bracken Books of London. I think the last print was in 1987, but you should be able to obtain a copy from a stockists like Robert Humm of Stamford (01780 766266). There isn’t much that Dusty Durrant doesn’t cover in this book, it’s packed with photo’s of all the Garratts ever produced (by Beyer Peacock & others), complete with works numbers & very descriptive text. Although the market isn’t saturated with books on the subject, there are a few others. The Origins Of The Garratt Locomotive (Richard L Hills, Plateway Press) being one & LMS & LNER Garratts (R.J.Essery & G.Toms, Wild Swan Publications) being another. If anyone knows of any others which are noteworthy, please let us know.

Articles
If you’ve any articles about Garratts that you’d like to share with us all, please send them to me at the address at the bottom of the page. I know that some of you are building some pretty spectacular locos out there, don’t keep them a secret-let us all know! Unfortunatly Richard Copperwheats Salem Garratt article wasn’t quite ready for this edition of the news letter, but he assures me it’ll be ready for the next one.
Steaming Days
You’ve already got the date for Garratt Sunday next year, the South Arbury Railway will also be having open days on 13 April, 21 Sept & 28 Dec 2003, as well as 28 Dec 2002. Eddie Bull has kindly invited all members of this association to both his open days of his spectacular Brinkley Light Railway (Newmarket)on 6 July & 12 Oct 2003. Anyone else got any open day dates?

Merry xmas & happy new year to all, hope you get a Garratt in your stocking!! Chris Moody.
